THE most exciting afro-cuban fusion band ever!
In 1999 I started a musical journey. It began as a few guys getting together and learning the intricacies of afro-cuban rhythms from our friend, Al DiMeola percussionist and master conguero, Gumbi Ortiz. We did a series of jam-band style gigs around town and got some notoriety. The unit solidified into a band and was eventually known as The Latino Projekt.
The Latino Projekt had many successes, not the least of which were two CDs; La Cura (2000) and Yo Soy de Aqui (2005). There were many personnel changes and the band's sound evolved and grew.
This latest incarnation is, by far, the most soulful, so much so it warranted a name change. In 2011 The Latino Projekt became New Groove City to reflect the new direction the band was taking. Gumbi and I, as founding members are joined by Marino Zayas on lead vocals, Aron Ferrer on piano, Luis Alicea on drums and Butch Thomas on sax with a rotating cast of guest soloists.
The journey continues and there hasn't been a dull moment in 18 years! New Groove City released our self-titled debut CD in 2012. Our single Sin Ti produced by the grammy award winning production team, J.U.S.T.I.C.E. League, was released in July of 2013.
